Alison Bancroft re-examines significant moments in 20th century fashion using psychoanalytic theory in her book, Fashion and Psychoanalysis: Styling the Self . She looks at fashion photography, haute couture, queer dressing, and fashion/art and shows how problems of subjectivity are played out through the public arena of fashion, and not just in the unconscious mind. She further shows how fashion articulates some of the essential, and sometimes frightening, truths about the body, femininity and the self.

She visits the Freud Museum on September 24th 2012, in post-Olympic recovery time, to explore all of this further. A long way perhaps from now, but worth booking soon if you are interested.
