It estimated that one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage and yet it persists as one of the least known pregnancy stories. In The Brink of Being, I encourage us to reflect upon this often misunderstood, and little-discussed experience. It was awarded ‘POPULAR MEDICINE BOOK OF THE YEAR 2021 by the British Medical Association, and runner-up for the overall BOOK OF THE YEAR. It has also been nominated for the British Psychological Society’s BOOK OF THE YEAR 2021 (November announcement).
My next book, Everyone’s A Critic, also for Virago Press, explores self-criticism and will be published August 2022.
Drawing on my personal experience, stories from my professional work and research over the years, and interviews with professionals in the field, The Brink of Being attempts to provide history, context and consolation for anyone who has been through pregnancy loss or wants to know how to help someone who has. I also investigate miscarriage in terms of how we respond to women’s bodies and reproductive health, our attitudes to birth and death, and how we can – and should – encourage more curiosity and candid conversations, in order to better support the many affected by this loss.
It was published in the UK, and the USA (Penguin) and in Taiwan and Poland. You can buy it here.
